How fuel cost is calculated
Litres required equals distance multiplied by fuel economy in L/100 km, divided by 100. Multiplying those litres by the entered price per litre gives the fuel cost.
For a round trip, the calculator doubles the one-way distance. Cost per person divides the selected trip total by the number of people sharing it.
Use a realistic fuel economy figure
A manufacturer rating is a useful reference, but recent real-world average consumption from your vehicle is often more helpful. Cold weather, traffic, speed, elevation, idling, roof racks, towing, payload, and tire pressure can all change consumption.
Worked example
A 300 km weekend trip
A car averaging 7.8 L/100 km needs about 23.4 litres for a 300 km one-way drive. At $1.62 per litre, that leg costs about $37.91.
The 600 km round trip uses about 46.8 litres and costs $75.82. Split between two people, the estimate is $37.91 each.Frequently asked questions
Should I enter highway or combined fuel economy?
Use the figure that best matches the trip. A recent real-world average is usually more representative than a laboratory rating.
Does the total include charging, tolls, or parking?
No. It estimates liquid fuel only. Add tolls, parking, ferries, charging, and other trip costs separately.
Why show both one-way and round-trip cost?
It keeps the input simple while making it easy to budget either a single leg or the return journey.
